The Spanish Ministry of Health & Consumer Affairs’ Quality Agency, through the Women's Health Observatory, is to train health professionals in care in birth, in line with the Strategy for Care in Normal Birth in the Spanish National Health System (SNS). The training programme, for health professionals in the Spanish regions, will take the form of an intensive 3-day seminar (21-23 April 2009) and six monographic workshops (7 teaching hours each) between May 2009 and May 2010.

Federica Montseny Award. To reward research into gender and health matters, this Award will be given at SESPAS 2009 (see Events section) to the best paper on this topic. The Award is worth €3,000, funded by the Women's Health Observatory of the Ministry of Health & Consumer Affairs.

European Commission Report on follow-up of 2003 Council Recommendations on cancer screening. (The report is based in part on a 2007 survey that was completed by the Health Planning Office on the basis of the information available at that time from the Spanish regions.)

13th Congress of the Spanish Society for Public Health and Health Administration (SESPAS 2009): The Time for Public Health. Seville, 4-6 March 2009. The preliminary proceedings on 3 March will include a session on “Equality legislation in healthcare”, sponsored by the SNS Quality Agency (16.00-19.30h in the España C Room of the Renacimiento Barceló Hotel, the site of the Congress in Seville). The Congress will also include a 1-day session with the Spanish Epidemiology Society (SEE) on Sexual and Reproductive Health in which the Ministry of Health & Consumer Affairs will take part (4 March, 11:30-13:00h and 13:00-14:30h in the España A Room).
